Associate Professor Justin Kirkland's recent article in AJPS, "Does Transparency Inhibit Political Compromise," has been named a co-winner of the APSA State Politics Section's Best Journal Article Award. The article, coauthored with Jeff Harding of Notre Dame, uses data from US state legislatures to test the common assertion that transparency inhibits compromise. The authors find that transparency may not be the hindrance to policy making that conventional wisdom suggests, and that effective governance appears possible in state legislatures even under public scrutiny.
