The University's annual Double Hoo Awards support original research projects conducted by undergraduate students paired with grad student mentors. This year's Double Hoo recipients include five teams with Politics students. Second-year economics and global security and justice double major Mithra Dhinakaran is partnering with Ph.D. candidate Alexis Jihye Yang to study successful outcomes for militant organizations in conflict. Garvey Goulbourne, a second-year global development studies and foreign affairs major, is collaborating with an Architecture grad student to study Black-led cooperatives as tools for combating oppression. Foreign affairs major Samuel Adrian Mamaril and Politics grad student Chris Dictus are studying interference by politicians in the field of intelligence. Sarita Mehta, a third-year politics honors major with a psychology minor, is partnering with a Ph.D. student in social psychology to study conversations about race and the interaction of anxiety and humility. And Lauren O’Neil, a political philosophy, policy and law major with minors in sociology and public policy, is teaming up with law student Julia Stamper to study the successes and shortcomings of Albemarle County’s kinship care policy.

We wish our Double Hoo scholars all the best with their research. Read more about these students and all the other 2021 Double Hoo awardees here.
