Ross Mittiga - PhD graduate and now assistant professor at the Institute of Political Science of the Catholic University of Chile - asks in a recent publication in the American Political Science Review if authoritarian power is ever legitimate. If a government cannot otherwise ensure the safety and security of the citizenry, due to emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change, then a government can exercise certain authoritarian modes of control.
